Yuta Togashi is a boy who suffered from “chunibyo” in junior high school, believing that he possessed supernatural powers, and called himself “Master of the Dark Flame”, therefore, alienated from his classmates. Finding his past embarrassing, Utah tries to start in high school where he knows no one, free from his old delusions. However, this turns out to be difficult as a delusional girl from his class, Rikka Takanashi, learns about Yuta’s past and becomes interested in him.
As the plot progresses, Rikka becomes more attached to Utah, who, despite finding her delusions annoying and embarrassing, accepts her. He helps Rikka in many things, including setting up and maintaining her club, and teaching her. The club in question, the Far Eastern Magic Dream Society – this summer, also includes the current chunibyo Sanae Dekomori; former chunibyo Shinka Nibutani; and the constantly sleeping Kumin Tsuyuri.
When Yuta joins Rikka on her summer vacation, Yuta learns that two years before that, Rikka’s father, with whom she was very close, unexpectedly died due to an incurable illness, which caused her to fall into error. After Yuta agrees to help Rikka in her search for the “Ethereal Horizon”, which, in her opinion, will lead her to her father, she begins to have a romantic interest in him, and vice versa.
