The Pragmatic Loner Hachiman Hikigaya Writes An Essay Describing His View Of The Life Of Modern Adolescents, Which Annoys His Language Teacher Shizuka Hiratsuka. As Punishment, She Forces Hachiman To Join The Soubu High School Service Club And Asks His Only Member, Yukino Yukinoshita, To Try To Fix His Broken Social Skills.

This Immediately Leads To A Clash Between The Students, And Shizuka Invites Them To Challenge Their Ideals By Helping The People Sent To The Club. The Next Day, Hachiman Learns That Yukino, Paradoxically, Was Made An Outcast Because Of Her Beauty And Due To Her Excellent Way Of Thinking. After That, Yui Yuigahama Asks The Service Club To Help Her Bake Cookies For A Friend, But Yukino Cannot Teach Her The Basics Of Cooking.

Hachiman Tries An Alternative Approach And Uses Psychology To Make Yui Realize That The Act Of Doing Something For Another Person Itself Means More Than How The Action Ends. The Following Week, Yukino And Hachiman Discuss Yui’s Request For The Ultimate Goal Of Personal Improvement Versus Reward For Improving Work, Despite The Risk Of Failure. Yui Then Appears At The Club And Thanks Hachiman And Yukino With The Homemade Cookies She Made Herself.

Shizuka Rebukes Hachiman Once Again For Basing His Biology Report On His Dissatisfaction With The Dominance Hierarchy Established By Social Groups. Later That Day, Yumiko Miura Demands A Direct Excuse From Yui As She Tries To Break Out Of Their Social Group To Have Lunch With Yukino. Yukino Then Appears And Asks For An Explanation About Yui’s Lateness, But Eventually Forgives Her.

However, Yumiko Explodes When Yui Focuses Her Attention On Yukino, Prompting The Latter To Yell At Yumiko About Her Self-centeredness. The Tense Atmosphere Then Crowds Out The Other Students, And Yui Uses The Opportunity To Explain That Meeting Hachiman And Yukino Helped Her Understand That She Can Be Herself And Not Force Herself To Do What Others Want From Her, Which Yumiko Accepts. The Next Day, A Delusional Teenager Named Yoshiteru Zaimokuza Shows Up At The Service Club.

After The Group Goes Around The Bush To Analyze His Ostentatious Personality, Yoshiteru Asks Them To Help Review A Light Novel He Has Written. Hachiman And Yukino Then Stay Awake All Night Reading His Novel And Present Their Criticism The Next Day, Which Turns Out To Be Less Than Positive. Despite The Brutal Honesty Of The Service Club, Yoshiteru Sincerely Accepts Their Words And Promises To Give Them A Review Of His Next Literary Work.
