In an alternate historical version of the United Kingdom in the early 20th century, scientists created a mixture of technology and witchcraft known as Machinart, circuits made from spells that are placed in objects to animate them and give them artificial intelligence. These submachine guns were developed as military weapons and spread throughout the world; the people in charge became known as puppeteers.
A puppeteer named Raishin Akabane came from Japan to Liverpool to study at the Walpurgis Royal Academy of Mechanical Engineering with his Yaya machine gun. Every four years, the Academy hosts the Night Party, a competition in which puppeteers use their submachine guns to fight in hopes of earning the Sage title. However, Raishin enters the school and competition to take revenge on the mysterious genius who killed the other members of the Raishin family.
